What is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phones allows communication through the Internet between two or more locations. VoIP phones use voice over internet protocol technology for placing and receiving telephone calls over an IP protocol, like the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network. The analog signal is converted into a digital sound through digital encryption and the resulting sound is digitized. VoIP phones use a converter to boost the quality of the sound produced and some VoIP equipment are referred to as VoIP servers. Digital phone service may be supplied by a single IP-based circuit or by circuits that connect multiple IP-based devices.

The advantages of VoIP Phones over traditional telephone systems are numerous.

For businesses, switching to a VoIP phone system allows for significant cost savings since the equipment is typically embedded with a VoIP system, eliminating the need for additional phone lines. This also results in significant cost savings for households since there is no longer a need for multiple phone lines. Additionally, businesses may utilize their voice phone system for secure video communication, conference calling, Internet conferencing, automated attendant services, and other capabilities that would be otherwise provided through additional phone lines.

One of the biggest benefits of VoIP Phones is the ability to provide expanded functionality to users at a lower cost. Phone services which utilize IP technology allow for several options such as extension dialing, call forwarding, auto attendant, conference calling, and so much more. These additional features can sometimes be very costly and even a small business could easily exceed the limit of available phone lines and be forced to purchase additional services. With VoIP phones however, it is entirely possible to utilize all these services without exceeding the company’s monthly phone usage limit. This gives a small business the ability to have streamlined operations and to expand at a much faster rate without having to put a great deal of financial strain on its finances.

An additional benefit to VoIP Phones comes from the way it substitutes traditional analog voice data with digital voice calls. Digital voice calls are much less expensive than analog calls, especially when made with a high-speed broadband connection. As a result, a business or an individual’s communications can be made over long distances without any noticeable difference in quality. This feature is particularly beneficial to those who use traditional landlines for their business needs, but who now need to make digital voice calls to clients or customers on a frequent basis.

VoIP Phones can also be used for voice mail, which is becoming quite common for both home and business consumers. Voice mail is delivered via email to a recipient who has chosen to receive such a service. Typically, this email is delivered through the internet, which has the added benefit of being immune to spam and other potential online attacks. This means that it is even more important for a business or residential consumer who makes VoIP Phones for voice mail to have an uninterrupted internet connection. The same is true of any business that makes VoIP Phones for calls, as poor connections to the internet can result in a high volume of missed calls or dropped calls, which can negatively impact a business’s reputation or operations.

Another major advantage of VoIP Phones comes from the way that they work with telephone service.

Whereas telephone services traditionally function through the use of analog signals that must pass through networks and different transmission technologies, VoIP Phones utilizes the much more efficient protocols of IP networking. Once an IP packet is sent, it can go anywhere that an internet connection exists. This means that when a VoIP phone is placed next to a conventional telephone service feed, the two devices will function as though they are connected to each other wirelessly over an existing copper line. This is why there is no noticeable difference between the two devices when VoIP Phones is in use.

One of the most fundamental protocols used in VoIP Phones is the RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) control protocol. RTP is used to configure and manage the session initiation, session termination, and signaling of VoIP phone calls. This control protocol ensures that all communication with VoIP Phones follows generally accepted guidelines and that calls are not interrupted due to network or equipment failure. This ensures that in the event of an issue, customers can continue to receive calls even when their telephone lines are down. RTP also controls the quality of the audio and the speed at which calls are transferred between IP networks.

  • There are several advantages of choosing VoIP Phones over conventional telephone lines, but perhaps the biggest reason is the fact that VoIP Phones allows you to incorporate a multitude of features into one package.
  • For example, some VoIP Phones allows you to make and receive calls while on the move, while others allow you to place or change the location of your callers at any time.
  • With VoIP phones, your caller id can be configured so that it appears to be “right in front” of your eyes wherever you are even though the majority of VoIP Phones simply pick up the first number that is called.
